Weather greatly influences one’s sleeping habits in many ways, both positive and negative. During the cooler months, catching some sleep is a breeze because cooler ambient air makes sleep more comfortable. However, during the warmer months, the hot and humid ambient air can make sleep physically uncomfortable. Not only that, it can also prevent the body from settling into deeper sleep each night.

But, you shouldn’t allow whatever season you’re in to get in your way of achieving better sleep each night. To survive the heat and catch more zzzz’s, here are top tips for cooling your bedroom on hot summer nights:

Switch your sheets with cotton fabrics.

To avoid swimming in your sweat on hot summer nights, get smart with your bedding and sheet options. Save your satin, silk, and polyester sheets for the cold season. This summer, opt for breathable and lightweight fabrics like cotton, linen, and percale instead to keep you cooler.

More so, take note that dark colors absorb more heat and light than light colors. So, if you want a cooler and more comfortable sleep each time, switch to light-colored sheets and beddings.

Go old-school with a DIY cooling ice fan.

Having an air conditioner can make sleep more attainable in summer. However, using the air conditioner all day and night can make your electricity bill go up in a snap. With or without an air conditioner, you can still cool your bedroom by going old school with a DIY cooling ice fan.

To create your cooling ice fan, you just need to position a bowl of ice in front of a fan. As the ice melts, the air blown all around your bedroom will create a cooling mist and a cooling effect.

Close blinds and windows during the day.

Be strategic in closing and opening your windows in summer. Leave windows and blinds closed during the day to keep the warm air from getting into your bedroom. But, once the sun goes down and the temperatures drop, open your windows to let the cooler air into your bedroom.

Hang a wet sheet in front of an open window.

Hanging a wet sheet in front of the window is another cheap and ingenious way to cool down a room. As the warm air passes through the wet sheet or cloth, its moisture cools it off before it enters your bedroom. This cooler breeze will quickly bring down your room’s temperature.

Only use lights minimally or not at all.

Light bulbs, whether they’re environment-friendly or not, give off heat when turned on. To prevent your bedroom from getting warmer, only use light minimally or not at all especially during the day. Take advantage of the sun’s light as much as possible to keep your bedroom cool at night.

Unplug electronics and small appliances when not in use to reduce the total heat in your bedroom. Gadgets and appliances can still give off heat if you simply turn them off without unplugging.

Have cooling indoor plants in your room.

Strip your bedroom of its throws and rugs, and put in cooling indoor plants instead. Aside from providing aesthetic value to your bedroom, plants such as aloe vera, ficus tree, snake plant, areca palm tree, and golden pothos can reduce the air temperature in your room by ten degrees.

As plants lose water during transpiration, the air around the plants gets cooler, purified, and fresh. Because of this, the temperature in wherever area these plants are easily becomes cooler.

Never let the summer weather ruin your good night’s sleep. Follow the above tips to say goodbye to hot summer nights!
